Material Properties

Made from 100% recycled paper. Greyboard consist of glued layers of paper fibres with a smooth surface on both sides. Since it is made from recovered paper and is not bleached, the grey tones will vary slightly from board to board.

Typical applications

Art & sculpture, Architectural models, Business cards, Display and decorative, Graphic design, Picture framing, Prototyping

Because greyboard is produced from natural paper fibres and are not bleached, variation in tone can occur from sheet to sheet.

Laser cutting

Protective backing can’t be used on greyboard as it rips the material surface.

Top surface

Cutting greyboard can be quite messy on thicker micron sheets . Lots of dusty residues are produced which will mark the material surface surrounding the cut lines.

Bottom surface

Where possible, we try to float the greyboard on the lamella to keep contact with the laser bed to a minimum when cutting. If your artwork is particularly dense, we will need to use honeycomb which will result in surface markings. Heat from the laser causes residues on the honeycomb to transfer back onto the material. We try to keep this to an absolute minimum using a low laser power but unfortunately these reverse markings are unpreventable. (See more image of marking on paper)

Cut widths & Kerf

The average cutting kerf for greyboard is +/- 0.2mm (how much the laser takes away.)
As a benchmark, we recommend that minimum cut widths be no smaller than the corresponding thickness of the material. See more on min cut widths.

Cut edge

Grey board laser cuts with a slightly brown / yellow edge. Dust particles from the laser cut edge rub off very easily so components need to be handled with care.

Raster & Vector engraving

Our standard engraving setting is quite shallow to avoid heat build up and excessive marking on the top surface. Grey board engraves with a brown / yellow appearance and with good clarity.

Deeper engraving

We can engrave deeper into the grey board surface but this can cause more scorch marks and black dust particles around the surrounding engraved area which dirty the material surface.
