Mylar® or Polyethylene Terephthalate is a versatile polyester film with a high durability, strength and high tensile properties. Mylar sheets are commonly used for stencil making.
Laser cutting mylar polyester is very precise and clean.
Usually Mylar polyester film is cut on honeycomb which can result in very slight markings. Heat from the laser can sometimes cause residues on the honeycomb to transfer back onto the material.
As a benchmark, we recommend that minimum cut widths be no thinner than 1mm on Mylar. Any smaller and they might not hold together successfully. See more on cut widths and Kerf (how much the laser takes away.)
The edges of Mylar melts slightly when cut producing a very subtle burred edge.
Because Mylar is used primarily for stencil applications, engraving is rarely required. Mylar can be vector engraved for identification purposes if required.
