Material properties

Zote foam are the industry leading manufacturers of medium density / closed cell polyethylene foam. Available in a wide range of polymer combinations to give varying degree’s of rigidity temperature resistance and mouldability.

Typical applications

Automotive, display and decorative, engineering and robotics, home products, marine applications, model making, packaging, products prototypes, upholstery.

Laser cutting

ZoteFoam is cut WITHOUT protective backing and with minimal marks on the top and bottom faces.

Cut widths & Kerf

Zotefoam generally has a very low melting point meaning intricate details will not hold themselves together very well. We recommend not having any cut widths less than 10mm on zotefoams of any thickness.

Cut edge

The laser cuts and seals the edge as it cuts. Due to focal distance of the laser and the ‘hourglass’ shape of the focal length, achieving a perfect 90 degree cut edge is difficult to achieve in comparison with die cutting. With thicker foams (10mm+) we use a long focus lens to make the edge as straight as possible. The less dense the foam, the more uneven the the edge will be.

Raster & Vector engraving

Foam engraves with a good clarity. Depth and clarity of engrave vary depending on the density of the foam but in most cases a good clarity can be achieved. A standard engrave depth is between 0.5mm and 1mm.

Deeper engraving

Engraving deeper than our standard setting isn’t advised. Too much heat from the laser will cause the foam to melt and warp. Bare in mind that raster engraving is not an absolute science in terms of depth specification so not suitable for making any recessed features requiring precise depths. A depth of engraving will always be within a tolerance of +/-0.2mm with a slightly uneven surface.

If you want to execute a recess effect in foam, the best way to achieve this is by having the recessed shapes completely cut out from a top layer foam (the thickness you would like the recess to be) and layering on top of an additional foam layer.
