Material properties

Stone or rock is a naturally occurring solid aggregate of minerals. All stone types can be laser etched or engraved but each reacts differently to the laser and will need to be tested.

Laser cutting not achievable

It’s not possible to laser cut stone with Co2 laser machines. It is best to have it supplied to us pre-cut to size using a waterjet cutting service.

Laser engraving

As a natural material, the laser reacts to types of stone differently depending on tone, density and hardness. In most cases the laser will produce a grainy recessed finish with little contrast to the stone surface. 3D engraving is also achievable using grayscale artwork. For us to establish the correct settings for your stone material, you will need to supply an additional sample to test.

Engraving stone produces stone dust that will need to be cleaned from the surface once you receive your job.

Variation in engraving

Please be aware that as a natural material, tone and hardness vary from piece to piece. This can have an impact on the appearance of the engraving if producing multiple engravings. Variation in tone can also be affected by power distribution if you have artwork that varies in size.

Deeper engraving

On some stone materials larger depths of between 2mm-3mm are possible. For this to be achieved, the laser has to run very slowly and using multiple passes which makes the job costly to process. Deeper engraving also produces a lot more dust particles that will need to cleaned from the surface.

If deeper engraving is required, we recommend that positive portions of your artwork (i.e. the white areas of your artwork – the inverse of what’s being engraved away) be no less the 2mm in thickness. If any less the engraving will tend to become quite fragile and can break easily when handled.
